New Details Emerge on Dramatic Rescue of Netanyahu's Son from Iran Plot
Nine months after a dramatic evacuation from Miami, new details have surfaced regarding an Iranian assassination attempt on Yair Netanyahu, the eldest son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The plot was reportedly uncovered in December 2025 by Israeli intelligence, which learned that an Iranian hit squad was already in the Miami area, conducting surveillance on Netanyahu's residence and daily routine.
According to a former head of the advisory committee for VIP security, the assassination attempt was thwarted at the "last minute." Information about the plot was known to some Israeli media outlets for months but was suppressed by military censorship until Prime Minister Netanyahu revealed it live on Channel 14 less than a month ago. The revelation came after military censors had previously prohibited its publication.
Upon receiving the intelligence warning, Israeli authorities alerted their U.S. counterparts. Yair Netanyahu, who was under constant Israeli security detail, was instructed to leave immediately. He reportedly fled without his personal belongings and was urgently flown back to Israel, arriving on December 7. The security detail accompanying him in Miami was deemed insufficient to handle the real-time threat.
In a rare move, two additional security teams assigned to protect President Isaac Herzog, who were in New York at the time, were dispatched to assist in the evacuation. Netanyahu was quickly transported to the airport and departed for Israel that same night. The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) has officially confirmed a "significant threat to harm Yair Netanyahu" and the subsequent decision to urgently extract him and his security team back to Israel.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has used the incident to defend the extensive security detail provided to his family, stating it is "not a luxury" and warning that insufficient protection could allow those who wish to harm his family to succeed. In July, the Shin Bet's security detail for his wife, Sara, and sons Yair and Avner was extended for an additional five years, even if he leaves office.
