A new electricity bill calculator highlights that advertised discount percentages on electricity plans may not reflect actual savings for households. For a family consuming 900 kWh bi-monthly, a 7% discount on the total bill yielded an annual saving of 240 shekels, while a 20% discount resulted in only 171 shekels saved annually. This discrepancy arises because discounts often apply only to the energy consumption component, not fixed charges for distribution and supply, and the percentage of consumption during discounted hours significantly impacts the final saving.

For instance, a 7% discount applied to all daily consumption effectively saved 6.31% of the total bill, whereas a 20% discount specifically for night hours, where the family consumed only a quarter of its electricity, amounted to a 4.51% saving on the overall bill. The most beneficial plan in the analysis offered a 10% discount across all hours, saving 343 shekels annually, or 9.02% of the total bill.

The calculator requires users to input their annual electricity consumption, tariff rate, and fixed monthly charges. An additional crucial input is the percentage of consumption during discounted hours, which can be precisely measured with a smart meter or estimated otherwise. With hundreds of thousands of households already switching to private electricity suppliers as part of a reform, the calculator aims to clarify the complex pricing structures. The analysis suggests that plans with lower advertised discounts but broader application, like the 7% plan, can be more economical than those with higher discounts limited to specific, low-consumption periods. The presence of an electric vehicle, often charged at night, can dramatically alter savings, making night-time discounts more lucrative if consumption during those hours increases substantially.
