Religious Zionist Leader Calls for Stronger Halachic Observance

Rabbi Yonah Goodman, a prominent figure in the Religious Zionist community, has issued a call for a renewed focus on the observance of Jewish law (Halacha) within the movement. In a video address, Goodman acknowledged the significant successes of Religious Zionism in instilling values of national commitment, citing contributions to military service, settlement, and immigration absorption as evidence of this achievement.

However, Goodman expressed concern that the religious aspect of the movement has not kept pace with its nationalistic achievements. He pointed to the heavy casualties sustained by the community, particularly during recent conflicts, as a stark reminder of their commitment to national ideals, but questioned the parallel strength in religious observance.

"Our situation on the religious side is not always satisfactory," Goodman stated, urging a strengthening and upgrading of Halachic practice. He proposed a concrete step: dedicating a regular time, at least once a week, for the study of Jewish law. This could be during a Shabbat meal or another convenient time, though he encouraged more frequent study if possible.

Goodman emphasized that beyond the knowledge gained, the act of studying Halacha itself carries significant educational weight. It sends a message that religious observance is important and that individuals are striving to do what is right and what God expects. He concluded with a hopeful note, expressing a wish for the community's desires to be fulfilled as they endeavor to follow divine will.
