Israel National Football Team Adopts Flexible Rooming Policy
The Israeli national football team is changing its long-standing policy of requiring players to share rooms, a move that allows for more individual flexibility in player recovery. New coach Ran Ben Shimon has introduced a more adaptable approach, recognizing that different players have unique recovery needs, especially those traveling from overseas and dealing with jet lag. This shift is highlighted by Ben Shimon's decision to call up an odd number of 27 players for the squad, ensuring at least one player will require a single room.
Ben Shimon has communicated to the team manager and consulted with the physiological staff to accommodate individual player requests for private rooms when justified and feasible. The coach's objective is to optimize player readiness for matches, focusing not only on team operations but also on the personal well-being of each athlete. This contrasts with the previous administration under Alon Hazan and Yossi Benyon, which strictly enforced double occupancy.
The new policy implicitly addresses the controversy surrounding Eran Zahavi in September 2022, when his request for a single room led to public and professional debate, his temporary exclusion from the team, and ultimately a compromise allowing his return. The current flexibility aims to prevent similar disruptions.
In a separate development, Charlotte FC requested that national team forward Idan Toklomati be excused from the first match in Austria to play a game in the U.S. against Chicago Fire. Toklomati initially conveyed the request to his club but then informed them of his desire to represent his country, emphasizing the importance of joining the national team from the outset, regardless of his starting position. Toklomati, who has scored nine goals this season, is competing for a spot with other in-form forwards like Tai Berkovic and Dor Turgeman.
Notably, Toklomati, Berkovic, and Dor Turgeman are scheduled to arrive in Austria only a day before the UEFA Nations League match, leading to speculation that Seid Abu Farhi, who is not fasting, might start as the striker, as he is expected to arrive earlier.
