Top Rabbi Emphasizes Torah Study's Role in World's Existence

Rabbi Dov Landau, the leading sage of the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, delivered the annual address at the institution on Wednesday, drawing thousands of students and alumni. Addressing the importance of diligent Torah study, particularly during the Ten Days of Repentance, Rabbi Landau stated that scholars are the pillars sustaining the world and living in divine closeness.

He stressed that every moment spent in Torah study upholds all of creation. Rabbi Landau urged students and married scholars, known as 'avreichim,' to maximize their study time with deep concentration, evaluating whether they are reaching their full potential in their learning. He referenced the Jerusalem Talmud, explaining that Torah becomes one's life when one toils and struggles with it, especially amidst financial hardship, which many avreichim face.

Rabbi Landau also advised focusing on the study of financial laws, such as those concerning interest, unauthorized borrowing, and exploitation of workers, due to their prevalence and potential pitfalls in daily life. He expressed hope that adherence to these laws would enable scholars to provide for their families with ease.

The address concluded with blessings for the heads of the Mir Yeshiva, Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel and other rabbis, wishing them success in expanding Torah scholarship and raising worthy students. Rabbi Landau then joined in a celebratory dance with the yeshiva's leadership.
