Religious Zionist Yeshivot Emphasize Torah Study for All, Beyond Just Attendance
As the month of Elul begins, yeshivot hesder across Israel open their study halls, filling with young and older students immersed in Torah learning. This flourishing world of Torah study, deeply rooted and expanding, reflects the strength and dedication of the Religious Zionist movement in all its facets, including Torah, settlement, and security service.
The Talmud Yerushalmi recounts a story of Rabbi Chama bar Chanina and Rabbi Hoshaya near Lod, highlighting the importance of investing not only in synagogues but in the Torah learners themselves. Rabbi Moshe David Valle, a disciple of Ramchal, emphasized that a king’s duty is not only to carry a Torah scroll but to read it daily, underscoring the necessity of active engagement with Torah study for its spiritual impact.
Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik taught that the blessing over Torah study is for the act of engaging in learning itself. Just as a businessman is constantly occupied with his work, a Jew’s primary occupation is Torah study, which remains central even amidst life’s demands. The blessing serves as a reminder of life’s purpose: to be devoted to the giver of the Torah.
The article stresses that establishing study halls is insufficient without active participation and continuous learning. There is a call for a broader vision to ensure that Torah study is a lifelong pursuit, integrated with action and growth, both inside and outside the yeshiva walls. The goal is to strengthen and guide learners so they join the workforce and simultaneously advance in Torah study without interruption.
