Russia, China Veto UN Sanctions Monitoring on Iran
Russia and China vetoed a US-proposed UN Security Council resolution that would have extended the mandate of a panel of experts monitoring sanctions against Iran. The sanctions, reimposed last year due to Iran's nuclear program, remain in effect and include asset freezes, arms embargoes, and restrictions on ballistic missile development.
The "snapback" mechanism, triggered by France, Germany, and Britain under the 2015 nuclear deal, reinstated the sanctions on September 27, 2025. This also reactivated the Security Council sanctions committee and authorized a UN expert panel to oversee their implementation.
The United States put forward the resolution to extend the expert panel's mandate for another year, amid a broader US effort to isolate Tehran economically. The resolution was defeated with 11 votes against, two in favor, and two abstentions from Somalia and Pakistan, due to the vetoes cast by Russia and China.
Separately, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Navy reported that a Togo-flagged oil tanker was hit and subsequently detained in the Strait of Hormuz after allegedly attempting to pass through illegally. The vessel caught fire before being apprehended.
