Jerusalem Ritual: Kosher Slaughterers Present Knives for Rabbinical Approval

In Jerusalem, a long-standing tradition was observed as kosher slaughterers presented their knives for inspection by Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch, a prominent rabbinical authority. The ritual took place in the "Lishkat Hagazit" on Katznelbogen Street in the Har Nof neighborhood during the week leading up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, and the preceding "Days of Mercy and Forgiveness." The slaughterers, described as veteran experts from the "Edah HaChareidis" organization, submitted their knives for a meticulous examination to ensure they met the strict requirements for ritual slaughter. Rabbi Sternbuch carefully inspected each knife, running his finger along the blade with extreme sensitivity to detect any imperfections or irregularities. Following the thorough review, he expressed his satisfaction and granted his kosher certification for their use in slaughter. Rabbi Binyomin Beyer, a member of the Edah HaChareidis's slaughter committee, was also present during the inspection, observing the procedures and the meticulous practices observed before the Day of Judgment.
