Ofer Vinter's Party Supports Torah Study Exemption from Draft

Yosef Haddad, a candidate for the "Am Israel" party led by Ofer Vinter, stated that individuals dedicated to Torah study will receive exemptions from military service under the party's leadership. In an interview with Kol Barama, Haddad affirmed, "Yes, yes, the answer is unequivocally yes." He elaborated that "a genius in Torah, who truly studies Torah and truly cares about Torah, will receive his status because it is important." Haddad, who identifies as Arab, suggested that Vinter understands this principle better than anyone and that he, as an Arab, can comprehend and agree with this stance.

The party's position comes amid reports of heated internal discussions regarding the draft law that "Am Israel" plans to present. The controversy reportedly centers on the extent of sanctions for draft dodgers within the Haredi community. According to reports, Vinter has adopted a more moderate approach compared to some party members, even reportedly telling them during a discussion, "I do not work for you." The party has denied this incident, stating that their draft plan will be revealed soon.

"Am Israel" has recently declared it will not join a government that does not pass a preliminary draft law mandating all young people to enlist and contribute. Vinter has also made it clear that if the Haredi parties oppose this initiative, "they can stay out of the coalition."
