Israeli President Herzog Calls for Unity Ahead of Elections

Herzog highlighted the psychological toll of the war, estimating that nearly a million Israelis have been affected. He called for a clear perspective on the "day after" the war and stressed the importance of resolving disputes between the branches of government by passing a Basic Law on legislation to delineate powers. He also touched upon the shared burden of national service and the broader implications of current events for the Jewish people.

Addressing the societal rift, the President called for a reduction in hatred and violence, urging mutual respect and a stable political system. He expressed a desire to avoid repeat elections, which he described as a "disaster," and stressed the need for balanced stability to move forward. Herzog also acknowledged the challenges faced by new immigrants, particularly from CIS countries, and thanked them for their contributions during a difficult period.

Regarding foreign policy, Herzog discussed proposals for Hamas disarmament and the establishment of a technocratic government in Gaza, mentioning the "Peace Council" plan. He also touched upon potential agreements with Lebanon and Syria, the role of Iran, and Israel's international standing, including reactions to the film "NAZA" and sanctions imposed by the UK on West Bank settlements, which he deemed a "grave mistake" and interference in Israeli elections.

Looking beyond his presidency, Herzog expressed his intention to become a teacher and continue his work on initiatives like "Exchanging Words" to foster dialogue and combat bullying in schools. He concluded by wishing the Russian-speaking community well and emphasizing their vital role in Israel's spiritual and cultural life.
