Israeli President Herzog Opposes New Elections Amid Political Deadlock

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed strong opposition on Wednesday evening to holding new elections if the upcoming Knesset vote fails to produce a clear majority. Speaking to i24NEWS, Herzog stated that a return to the ballot box should only be considered as a last resort, emphasizing that "new elections must be the last of the last options."

When asked about the process of selecting a candidate to form the next government in the event of an unclear outcome, Herzog explained that he would meticulously review the results and consult with all political parties involved, adhering to standard post-election procedures. "I will see the results, I will listen to the different parties. But if there is a tie or a deadlock, I am very opposed to the possibility of new elections," he said.

Herzog recalled Israel's recent history of political instability, which saw five legislative elections in less than four years prior to 2023. He linked this instability to the nation's vulnerability, referencing the events of October 7th, stating, "We arrived in 2023 and on the day of our catastrophe just after five electoral campaigns."

He concluded by urging Israeli citizens to participate actively in the upcoming elections to ensure a decisive majority is formed. "It would be desirable for these elections to lead to a clear decision, and I really call on all citizens of Israel to participate in the elections," Herzog stated.
