Avi Maoz Slams Tel Aviv Mayor Over Banned Gender-Segregated Prayer Event
Avi Maoz, chairman of the Noam party, fiercely criticized Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai's decision to prohibit a gender-segregated "Selichot" (penitential prayers) event at Tel Baruch beach. Maoz accused Huldai of "playing with fire" and declared that the mayor's "struggle against Jewish identity has crossed every line."
Maoz further asserted, "In Tel Aviv, what is permitted for Muslims is forbidden for Jews." He vowed that his movement would "fight for the right to feel free to be Jewish, even in Tel Aviv."
The controversy stems from the Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality's refusal to allow the planned Selichot event, scheduled for Saturday night, to proceed with a separation between men and women. This decision has led the Union of Community Rabbis and the Linor Municipality to file a petition with the Tel Aviv District Court.
The petitioners are requesting the court to intervene and permit the event to be held with gender segregation, which they claim is customary for such religious gatherings. As of the report's publication, the Tel Aviv municipality had not yet issued a response.
