Global Prisons Feature Extreme Conditions Beyond Israeli Facilities

The recent transfer of inmate Agam Zarfi from Neve Tirtza to Abu Kabir detention center in Tel Aviv has highlighted the harsh conditions within Israeli prisons. Zarfi, accused of murdering Benayahu Razi, was moved due to alleged violations of prison regulations and altercations with other inmates. While Abu Kabir is noted for its security, it is just one example of stringent incarceration facilities worldwide.

Globally, numerous prisons are characterized by extreme isolation, overcrowding, and severe restrictions. ADX Florence in the United States, a Supermax facility nicknamed "the Alcatraz of the Rockies," confines inmates to solitary cells for approximately 23 hours a day with minimal human contact.

Russia's Black Dolphin prison is known for its rigorous security measures and constant surveillance, where inmates are prohibited from lying down or sitting for extended periods. In contrast, San Pedro Prison in Bolivia operates with a unique internal economy where inmates manage aspects of their lives, rent cells, and run businesses, alongside significant issues with drugs and violence. Families of inmates have historically been permitted to live within the prison walls.

Syria's Tadmor Prison, historically notorious for systematic human rights abuses, torture, and extrajudicial executions, was destroyed by ISIS in 2015. Manila City Jail in the Philippines is one of the world's most overcrowded prisons, struggling with poor hygiene, shortages, and constant gang unrest.

Honduras's Dani Prison is characterized by a lack of control by guards, with inmates wielding significant power within the facility, reportedly leading guards to lock themselves in for protection.
