Israel's Medical Institute for Road Safety Cuts Wait Times After Union Deal
A new agreement has been signed between the Histadrut labor union, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Health to improve employment conditions and compensation for staff at the Medical Institute for Road Safety. The deal aims to enhance public service and reduce lengthy waiting periods for the institute's services.
As a result of these efforts, waiting times at the institute have been significantly reduced from approximately 18 months to about 4 months over the past year. The goal is to further decrease this to three months. This improvement is part of a broader initiative that included increasing staff, streamlining procedures, and reducing the backlog of cases.
The Medical Institute for Road Safety, a unit within the Ministry of Health, specializes in traffic medicine and preventing road accidents caused by drivers' health conditions. Its staff handle all aspects of medical fitness-to-drive assessments, from initial referrals to final professional recommendations for the licensing authority.
The agreement includes a NIS 12,000 incentive bonus for each employee to help manage workload and process cases more efficiently. Additionally, it provides for job grade promotions, increased vehicle allowances, and adjusted shift allocations based on operational needs.
Histadrut Chairman Arnon Bar-David praised the agreement, highlighting the organized labor's ability to effect real change and the importance of supporting the institute's staff, whose work directly impacts road safety. He commended the State Employees Union chairman, Adv. Ofir Alklai, and the employee committee for their constructive dialogue.
Adv. Alklai emphasized that the agreement acknowledges the vital work of the institute's employees, who face exceptional workloads and responsibilities. He noted that the deal offers tangible benefits, including the bonus, improved employment terms, and better allowances.
Shani Sharvit, Deputy Director General for Human Resources and Administration at the Ministry of Health, stated that the reduction in waiting times represents a significant improvement in public service. She attributed this achievement to the staff's dedication and the procedural changes implemented at the institute, adding that the new agreement will further enhance services for both employees and drivers.
