Israeli Charity Od Avinou Hay Supports War-Traumatized and Orphaned Children
The Israeli organization Od Avinou Hay provides care and support for orphaned children and youth in distress, according to Rav Haïm Ishay, a rabbinical judge and the organization's director, speaking to i24NEWS. The association operates multiple homes for minors placed by Israeli social services, including children who have lost both parents or were repatriated from war zones. Od Avinou Hay claims to have brought 18 children from Ukraine to Israel.
The organization currently manages 15 homes and cares for 4,336 children, a number Ishay noted is unfortunately growing. The children receive comprehensive support, including schooling tailored to their needs, and participate in workshops covering music, AI, electronics, and carpentry. Sports facilities, such as gyms and courts, are also available to help the children find stability and overcome their circumstances.
Following the October 7, 2023 attacks, Od Avinou Hay established a specialized program for children affected by the violence. One home in Hatzerim, along with families from Gaza border communities, accommodates some of these children, who receive psychiatric and psychological support to process their trauma. Their privacy is protected from the press and external contact to aid their recovery.
Rav Haïm Ishay described the significant progress made by these young individuals, stating, "There are still wounds. There are children who saw their families decimated." He expressed optimism about their recovery, attributing it to time, psychological care, and dedicated resources.
The director also shared the story of a teenager who joined the organization at 16 with severe growth and drug issues, whose mother had died of AIDS and whose father was imprisoned for drug trafficking. After years of support, the young man completed his military service, became an accountant, and now financially supports Od Avinou Hay. Facing increasing needs and expenses, Ishay has appealed for donations to continue their work.
