Supermarket Chain Sells Memorial Candles for Yom Kippur
Ahead of Yom Kippur, the Sapir Group supermarket chain and the "One Family" organization have launched a joint initiative to commemorate the victims of the October 7th attacks and fallen soldiers. As part of this effort, 50,000 memorial candles will be offered to the public for 5 shekels each, under the slogan "We All Light Together." The initiative aims to allow the public to light a candle in memory of someone who lost their life since October 7th, dedicating a moment to their memory, name, and life story.
The candles will be distributed before Yom Kippur through the Sapir Group's supermarket network, a time when many people traditionally light memorial candles for loved ones. The initiative seeks to give national remembrance a personal expression by lighting a candle for one of the fallen or victims.
Profits from the candle sales will be donated to the "One Family" organization, which supports bereaved families and victims of terror and hostile acts. Since October 7th, the organization has expanded its services, providing families with personal and emotional support, support groups, community activities, and ongoing assistance.
Oren and Avinoam Sapir, CEOs of the Sapir Group, stated that Yom Kippur is a day when memory takes on profound meaning, and this year, alongside personal memories, thousands of Israeli families carry a new and painful absence since October 7th. They expressed a desire to enable everyone to participate in a simple yet meaningful gesture: lighting a candle, saying a name, and giving a moment of space to the departed, hoping tens of thousands of candles will be lit across the country.
Moshe Swill, CEO of the "One Family" organization, added that Yom Kippur is a day for reflection and remembrance, but for bereaved families, this remembrance is a daily reality. He emphasized the significance of the entire public pausing together with these families, lighting a candle, and acknowledging the names and stories behind the loss, seeing the connection between commemoration and ongoing support as an expression of mutual responsibility.
