Young Basketball Player Recovers from Severe Head Injury to Return to Court

Young basketball player Itay Schneiderman suffered a severe head injury during a game when he collided with a wall and fell unconscious. His father, Chen Schneiderman, described the terrifying moment, recounting how his son's head hit the wall. Emergency services were called, and paramedics guided bystanders through CPR as Itay was unresponsive and having difficulty breathing. He was rushed to Rambam Medical Center and placed in intensive care, remaining unconscious for nine days. Doctors determined the impact caused brain damage, affecting his emotional and behavioral functions, leading to significant cognitive and emotional challenges during his initial rehabilitation. Itay was transferred to Sheba Medical Center for rehabilitation, where he eventually regained consciousness, initially disoriented and struggling with severe headaches and relearning basic motor skills like walking. Despite the physical hurdles and doctors' warnings, Itay's determination to play basketball again, fueled by his passion for the sport, led him to return to the court. His father described the decision as difficult, admitting they lacked the courage to let him return so soon. Itay now plays with a special protective helmet. Chen Schneiderman criticized the inadequate padding on the arena wall where the accident occurred, calling it a safety failure. The regional council stated the arena was licensed and met all requirements, adding that the basketball association introduced new safety demands only after the incident, and they deny any negligence.
