Composer of Beloved 'Etz Chaim Hi' Melody Laid to Rest

Tanchum Portnoy, the composer of the widely sung 'Etz Chaim Hi' melody, was buried this week in Beit Shemesh, Israel. Portnoy, who composed the tune at the young age of 22, was remembered by Rabbi Natanel Elyashiv for his significant musical contribution, which has become a staple in synagogues globally.

Many recognize the melody, often sung during the Torah scroll's return to the Ark, but few knew the man behind it. Rabbi Elyashiv highlighted Portnoy's legacy, noting that while the composer's face and name were not widely known, his music has deeply permeated Jewish prayer services worldwide. Portnoy, who was born and lived in New York, left behind a musical gem that will continue to be cherished for years to come.

Rabbi Elyashiv urged the public to honor Portnoy's memory by ensuring the melody is sung as he composed it. "Let us make sure that this Shabbat we sing it to his melody," he stated, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the composer's work.
