Haifa Theater Event Honors 'Jenin Jenin' Director Amid Controversy

Haifa Theater is hosting an evening dedicated to the memory of Mohammad Bakri, the creator of the film 'Jenin Jenin.' The event has sparked controversy due to a court ruling that found the film defamed IDF soldiers and falsely accused them of war crimes. The film, released in 2002, documented the events of the Battle of Jenin during Operation Defensive Shield.

Despite the legal findings, the theater decided to proceed with the tribute. Sami Abu Shehadeh, chairman of the Balad party, was reported to be in attendance at the event. The court's decision in 2022 stated that Bakri's film presented a biased and false narrative, leading to a libel lawsuit filed by reservist soldiers who participated in the battle. The lawsuit sought NIS 1 million in damages.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions surrounding artistic expression, particularly when it intersects with national security and military operations. The court's ruling emphasized the need for journalistic and artistic responsibility when depicting sensitive events involving the military.
