Beit Shemesh Municipality Fined for Data Breach Affecting Thousands
Israel's Privacy Protection Authority has fined the Beit Shemesh Municipality 64,000 shekels (approximately $17,000 USD) following a data leak that exposed the personal information of nearly 4,600 residents. The breach occurred due to a malfunction in the municipal Geographic Information System (GIS). This malfunction allowed unauthorized access to sensitive resident data, including medical records and social services information, through the municipality's website.
The vulnerability was discovered by a journalist who then alerted the authorities. The Privacy Protection Authority, operating under the Ministry of Justice, conducted an investigation which led to the imposition of the fine.
