Beit Shemesh court orders 80,000 shekels over social media smear against high school student
A Beit Shemesh Magistrate’s Court has ruled that a social media rumor spread by two former students about a high school girl amounted to libel, according to a report published Monday. The plaintiff, a 12th-grade student from Beitar Illit, sued after the two girls circulated a claim online that was later shared at the religious school in Beit Shemesh where the students study.
The rumor was distributed through a QR code posted at the school. It led to a social media post alleging that the girl had carried on an affair with a divorced 41-year-old dentist for whom she worked, became pregnant by him, and had an abortion, all without her parents knowing.
Judge Elad Lang accepted the student’s claim and ordered the two former students to pay her 80,000 shekels in compensation. The ruling says the online publication constituted defamation.
