Egypt's Sisi Meets Abbas, Discusses Gaza War End, Palestinian Issues
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments in the Palestinian territories. The talks focused on ways to implement an agreement to end the war in Gaza, facilitate humanitarian aid into the Strip, and address the situation in the West Bank.
According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency's spokesperson, Abbas briefed Sisi on the "tragic conditions in the West Bank resulting from the Israeli occupation's policies." President Sisi affirmed Egypt's rejection of the displacement of the Palestinian people and any attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause. He also reiterated Egypt's opposition to all forms of escalation and Israeli violations against Palestinians.
Sisi emphasized Egypt's continued efforts, in coordination with mediators, to implement the Gaza ceasefire agreement reached at the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in October 2025. He stressed the necessity for all parties to adhere to the agreement's terms, including de-escalation, ensuring humanitarian aid flow, and preparing for early recovery and reconstruction.
Abbas arrived in Cairo on Tuesday for a two-day visit, accompanied by a delegation including Hussein al-Sheikh, deputy head of the PLO Executive Committee; Rawhi Fattouh, speaker of the Palestinian National Council; Majed Faraj, head of General Intelligence; and Majdi al-Khaldi, diplomatic advisor to the president.
Later on Wednesday, Abbas met with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby in Cairo. They discussed enhancing joint coordination and cooperation to mobilize Arab and international support for the Palestinian cause. Abbas also highlighted the difficult economic situation in Palestine, stemming from Israel's continued withholding of over six billion dollars in Palestinian tax revenues and its actions undermining the Palestinian Authority's institutions.
