Top Rabbis Launch New Fundraising Model for Torah Scholars Amid Funding Crisis

Leading rabbis in Israel have announced a significant shift in the operational model of the "World of Torah Fund" (Keren Olam HaTorah), a major organization supporting thousands of Torah scholars and yeshiva students. This change comes in response to a substantial funding deficit, exacerbated by a decline in the dollar's value which has reduced foreign donations by approximately 20% in the past year.

The World of Torah Fund, established to provide comprehensive financial support to around 2,000 Torah institutions and 200,000 students across Israel, was initially created after government funding was cut. The fund's founders, including prominent rabbis, committed over $100 million annually to prevent the collapse of Torah study in the country. To secure these funds, these leading rabbis undertook extensive international travel, visiting nine countries and participating in over 150 events, logging more than 1,200 flight hours.

Under the new model, the responsibility for sustaining Torah scholars is being broadened beyond wealthy foreign donors to include the general public in Israel. This initiative is being launched with a campaign called "For Your Torah," involving approximately 80 seminaries whose students are reaching out to the public for donations. The rabbis are urging the public to receive these students' calls and requests with kindness and generosity.

The campaign emphasizes that 100% of donations go directly to the scholars, providing not only financial aid but also spiritual encouragement. The timing of this appeal is particularly significant, occurring just before the High Holy Days, a period when many believe divine judgment is being rendered. The rabbis are offering blessings for good health, suitable marriages, and satisfaction to all who contribute, framing the donations as an opportunity for eternal merit and true partnership in supporting Torah study.
