Former Israeli Footballer Eli Ohana Criticizes Coach Almog Cohen Over Jordan Shua's Role

Former Israeli football star Eli Ohana has publicly criticized Beitar Jerusalem coach Almog Cohen for his handling of player Jordan Shua, who has seen limited playing time recently. Despite Beitar Jerusalem securing their second consecutive win, the focus post-match was on Shua's minimal involvement, sparking debate about why the star player isn't starting.

Ohana stated on "5 באוויר" that it's acceptable, even desirable, for a player of Shua's caliber to be disappointed when not in the starting lineup, provided their conduct remains professional and doesn't disrupt the team. He acknowledged that there isn't a close relationship between Shua and Cohen, noting that the club has unsuccessfully sought to transfer Shua abroad for the past two years due to a lack of suitable offers.

Ohana explained that Beitar's current playing system, favored by Cohen, is incompatible with starting both Shua and Yarden Abuchatzira simultaneously if the desired intensity, defensive pressure, and full-back support are to be achieved. He argued that Cohen cannot fundamentally change Shua's playing style to fit this system.

"Almog Cohen needs to find a way to integrate Shua, or you must release him," Ohana declared, emphasizing that a player considered one of the best in the country cannot be managed in this manner. He questioned the decision to bring Shua on only in the 89th minute of a recent match, suggesting it was counterproductive. Ohana stressed that a coach's role includes managing the dressing room effectively, and Cohen's current approach is unacceptable, especially without consistent positive results.
