Arab Israeli Student Presents AI Space Research at German Conference
Osaim Zakaria Igbaria, a master's student in artificial intelligence at TU Berlin, presented advanced research on AI and space technology at the German Aerospace and Space Conference 2026. Igbaria, originally from Umm al-Fahm, Israel, co-presented a paper titled "Relative Pose Estimation System for Small Satellite Docking." The research addresses the critical challenge of how one satellite can accurately approach and dock with another, focusing on precise positioning and orientation.
The study integrates artificial intelligence, computer vision, and stereo cameras to enable a system to identify docking interfaces, analyze images, and calculate three-dimensional position, orientation, and distance. This technology has potential applications in satellite maintenance, docking, repositioning, and managing space debris.
The research team utilized synthetic data and advanced techniques, including 3D Gaussian Splatting and AI models like YOLOv8 and VMamba, to achieve high accuracy in relative pose estimation. Igbaria's academic journey includes completing his bachelor's degree in computer science at age 17, and he is expected to finish his master's in Germany in the coming months.
