Israel Offers Space and AI Defense Tech to Europe Amid Political Tensions

Despite ongoing political friction and threats of sanctions from the European Union over Israeli settlements, the EU is seeking Israel's expertise in advanced technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence and satellite systems for defense and disaster management. This collaboration comes as the EU faces increasing threats from Russia and the militarization of space.

Israel is highlighting its capabilities in dual-use technologies, systems applicable for both civilian and military purposes. A key area of focus is early warning systems, drawing on Israel's experience with missile attacks, such as those from Iran. These systems can be adapted to alert citizens to various threats, including ballistic missiles, and to mitigate casualties.

Beyond military applications, Israeli technology can also be utilized for civilian needs like monitoring and responding to natural disasters such as wildfires, floods, and droughts. The integration of satellite imagery with AI-powered models is seen as crucial for developing multi-layered defense and response systems.

However, past attempts at deeper defense cooperation have been stalled due to political sensitivities, particularly during the conflict in Gaza, which made reliance on Israeli defense technology politically challenging for some European nations. In contrast, Greece recently finalized a significant deal worth approximately 3 billion euros with Israel for a multi-layered air defense system.

The EU's current pursuit of Israeli technology underscores a shift in priorities, driven by the war in Ukraine, the Russian threat, and the growing recognition of space as a potential conflict zone. Technologies previously deemed too politically sensitive are now becoming sought-after assets for European defense.
