Bennet Criticizes Smotrich Over Divisive Politics, Warns of Hamas Resurgence
Former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has sharply criticized current Minister Bezalel Smotrich, accusing him of exacerbating internal divisions within Israel during the election campaign. Bennett's criticism, aired on radio station 103FM, targeted Smotrich's campaign video, which used AI to depict a mob dragging judicial figures through the streets. Bennett called the video "extremely unfortunate" and stated that Smotrich's Religious Zionism movement should focus on societal unity, questioning Smotrich's role in "tearing the State of Israel apart."
Bennett also addressed the controversial "Naza" film, which sparked significant public and political debate. He reiterated his opposition to the film, stating that its concept of collateral damage contradicts the notion of intentionally targeting civilians. While criticizing the film's title and its creators' potential violation of laws regarding the transfer of military information, Bennett opposed revoking the creators' citizenship, deeming it excessive and likely to draw further international attention.
Looking ahead, Bennett outlined his party's post-election focus on practical national issues, including education and economic policy. He highlighted a plan to reform the education system to address a severe teacher shortage and proposed linking state support for Haredi Jews to civic duties, such as military service or employment.
Most critically, Bennett warned that Hamas is regaining strength in Gaza despite significant military losses. Citing soldiers he met, Bennett stated that the organization is increasing its numbers, weaponry, and financial capabilities, with attempts at smuggling into Israel resuming. He criticized Qatar and Turkey's potential roles in Gaza's future, arguing their policies bolster Hamas and proposed their exclusion from post-war governance, favoring Egypt's increased involvement and the dismantling of Hamas's infrastructure.
Bennett also commented on the potential resettlement of Gaza's population, emphasizing adherence to international law and presenting it as one possible scenario among others.
