Israel's economic and maritime sectors are facing severe concern as the southern port of Eilat is on the brink of a complete shutdown. This threat stems from the escalating security risks and the Houthi rebels' effective control over the Bab el-Mandeb strait in Yemen.

According to a report by ynet, the Houthi takeover has triggered a sharp, anxiety-driven increase in maritime insurance costs for international shipping companies. This surge in expenses is jeopardizing the minimal commercial activity still reaching the port.

The ongoing maritime blockade and heightened dangers in Red Sea shipping lanes have rendered voyages to the region economically unviable for many freight operators. International maritime experts warn that the combination of soaring insurance premiums and direct security risks at the strait is deterring shipping companies and cargo vessels from reaching Israel's southernmost gateway.
