New York Man Gets 90 Days for Hate Crime Attack on Israeli
A 28-year-old Queens resident, Yahya Amin, has been sentenced to just 90 days in jail and five years of probation for a hate crime assault on an Israeli man near Times Square on October 18, 2023. Amin pleaded guilty to third-degree assault as a hate crime. According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, Amin followed a group of young men wearing kippahs, played "Hamas music," and told them, "I want to kill you for Gaza," before striking one of the victims on the head.
The victim and his companions pursued Amin until the New York Police Department intervened and arrested him. The relatively light sentence has drawn criticism, particularly in light of the timing of the attack, shortly after the October 7th Hamas attacks on Israel. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about antisemitism and hate crimes in New York City.
