New York Court Sentences Attacker of Israeli Man to 90 Days
A New York court has sentenced Yahya Amin to 90 days in jail and five years of probation for a hate crime assault on a 23-year-old Israeli man near Times Square on October 18, 2023. As part of a plea deal, Amin was convicted of third-degree assault, classified as a hate crime.
According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, Amin followed a group of young men wearing kippahs, played "Hamas music," and stated, "I want to kill you for Gaza," before striking one of the men on the head. The victim and his companions pursued Amin until the New York Police Department intervened and made the arrest.
The sentence has drawn criticism, particularly in light of the timing of the attack, shortly after the October 7th Hamas attacks on Israel.
