Chris Coons Wins Delaware Democratic Primary, Securing Senate Reelection Bid

Senator Chris Coons, a Democrat, has won the Delaware Democratic Party primary election, positioning him to seek a fourth term in the U.S. Senate on November 3. The Associated Press declared him the winner shortly after polls closed. Coons will face Republican challenger Mike Katz in the general election. Delaware has remained a predominantly Democratic state for decades.

Coons is recognized for his consistent support of American military aid to Israel. He has repeatedly voted against resolutions aimed at blocking or restricting U.S. arms shipments to Israel. In April 2026, explaining one such vote, Coons stated he would not leave a U.S. ally without necessary weaponry, while also clarifying that his stance did not equate to endorsing the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

The senator's position on Israel became a point of contention during the Democratic primary. Jeff Appelhans, one of three other candidates seeking the nomination, advocated for ending U.S. support for the war in Gaza and declared he would not continue supplying arms to Israel.
