Barilla Launches AI Chef in Israel to Suggest Recipes Based on Available Ingredients
Pasta brand Barilla has introduced a new digital chef service in Israel called "Antoni," designed to help consumers decide what to cook for dinner. The AI-powered tool generates recipes in real-time based on ingredients users have on hand, the number of diners, and the available cooking time.
Access to Antoni is provided through a QR code found on Barilla products and in pasta and sauce aisles at select supermarkets. Scanning the code initiates a conversation in Hebrew, without requiring app downloads or registration. Users are prompted to list their available ingredients, how much time they have, the number of people to feed, and any dietary restrictions or preferences. They also need to specify which Barilla product they have or are considering buying.
The system then suggests a tailored recipe, aiming to solve the common dilemma of meal planning. By starting with the contents of the pantry and refrigerator, Antoni can help families utilize leftovers and ingredients before they expire, thereby reducing food waste.
While useful, Antoni is not entirely neutral as it was developed by a food brand. Its suggestions are intended to integrate with Barilla's pasta and sauces, serving as both a practical tool and a way to maintain consumer engagement post-purchase. This launch signifies a shift in AI development from general-purpose systems to specialized assistants that support routine consumer activities, aiming to assist rather than replace the home cook in moments of culinary indecision.
