US Moves to Sell Israel $2.8 Billion in Heavy Bombs

The United States administration is preparing to approve a $2.8 billion sale of heavy bombs to Israel, including approximately 40,000 bombs weighing around 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds) each. This potential deal, reported by The Washington Post, represents the largest single sale of this type of munition to Israel in recent years. The package includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, and 20,000 I-2000 bunker-buster warheads.

The proposed sale would be funded by U.S. foreign aid to Israel and has been informally submitted to relevant Congressional committees for review. These specific types of bombs have previously been a point of contention between the two countries. The Biden administration had halted one shipment in the spring of 2024 due to concerns about the use of heavy munitions in densely populated areas of Gaza.

According to the report, the Trump administration is now working with the leadership of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee to advance the approval process for this significant arms deal. Deliveries for an order of this magnitude could span several years.

A senior administration official told The Washington Post that all arms sales to foreign countries undergo the appropriate review process, declining to comment on deals currently in progress.
