Thai Public Outraged by Israeli Tourist Behavior, Demands Action

A recent poll conducted in Thailand has revealed widespread public discontent with the behavior of Israeli tourists, with a significant majority expressing a need for stricter law enforcement against them. The survey, conducted by NIDA Poll from September 8-10 among residents of Bangkok and five provinces, indicated a growing tension fueled by what locals perceive as disrespect for Thai laws, traditions, and a general disregard for local customs.

Nearly 76% of respondents reported personal encounters or awareness of inappropriate conduct by Israeli visitors, citing blatant disregard for legislation, rude treatment of service staff, and disrespect for Thai culture as primary concerns. The issue is particularly acute in popular tourist destinations like Phuket and Koh Phangan.

Beyond social conflicts, there is significant concern over illicit economic activities, with locals alleging that Israelis are using Thai citizens as fronts to circumvent laws prohibiting foreign ownership of businesses and land. In response to these sentiments, 45% of those polled advocated for reducing the visa-free stay period for Israelis, while 38% called for the Israeli diplomatic mission to increase educational efforts among its citizens.

The poll's findings followed a protest outside the Israeli embassy in Bangkok, where hundreds demanded government action against foreign offenders. Thailand's Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow met with Israeli Ambassador Alona Fisher-Kamm, urging decisive measures to prevent further incidents. The Israeli embassy stated its commitment to cooperating with local authorities and issued updated guidelines for tourists, emphasizing respect for Thai laws.

This situation arises amidst a steady increase in Israeli tourism to Thailand, with over 277,000 Israelis visiting in the first eight months of the year, a 7% rise compared to the previous year.
