LOD Mayor Bans Electric Scooters and Bikes on Yom Kippur

In anticipation of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, the Mayor of Lod, Adv. Yair Revivo, has issued a special order prohibiting the use of all electric and motorized vehicles, including e-scooters, e-bikes, and ATVs, throughout the city for the duration of the 25-hour holiday. This measure, which was also implemented last year with success, aims to address numerous complaints received over the past decade regarding noise and disturbances near synagogues and in public spaces on Yom Kippur.

Mayor Revivo explained that the ban is intended to prevent unnecessary friction between religious and secular residents, as well as between Jewish and Arab citizens, stemming from a lack of mutual respect. He emphasized his role as mayor is to preserve the status quo, honor the tens of thousands of worshippers in Lod's over 150 synagogues, and ensure the safety of children who, he noted, often ride these vehicles with excessive confidence and recklessness.

Regular bicycles are permitted, provided they are ridden quietly and without sound systems. The prohibition specifically targets motorized and noisy vehicles, which have been the primary source of complaints. Enforcement will focus on preventing disturbances and dangers, and maintaining the sanctity and quiet of the day.

While cars are allowed to travel within the city, except on blocked roads, Revivo urged drivers to be considerate and use short routes for exiting the city to avoid offending public sentiment. He invited all residents, Jewish and Arab, to respect one another, allowing worshippers to pray peacefully and families to use regular bicycles in parks and neighborhoods.

"On this day, more than ever, we are required to show mutuality, sensitivity, and respect. Let us, God willing, preserve together the sanctity of Yom Kippur and the special fabric of the city of Lod," Revivo concluded, extending a traditional Yom Kippur greeting.
