Rabbi Benyamin Eisenberger, head of Hekhal HaTalmud Yeshiva and av beit din of Hekhal HaTefillah, has issued a strict new rule for his students in Boro Park, Brooklyn: they may not own or ride electric scooters. The ban was announced this week after a series of recent traffic accidents in the neighborhood involving electric vehicles.
The decision was prompted by a severe accident in which one of the yeshiva’s own students was badly injured after being struck by a passing car while riding an electric device in the streets of the area. According to the report, the growing number of dangerous incidents in the Orthodox neighborhood convinced the rabbi that the matter had reached a breaking point.
The yeshiva building is located at the edge of Boro Park, on 60th Street, and many students who live farther away had used scooters to shorten their commute and arrive on time for prayers and study sessions. Even so, Rabbi Eisenberger ruled that no student may keep such a device or bring it onto the yeshiva grounds.
He instructed the students to come only on foot or by controlled transport options such as local taxis. The article presents the move as a model for others, arguing that electric scooters and e-bikes have become a major source of avoidable injuries and tragedies.
