Arab Local Authority Heads Call Emergency Meeting Over 'Settler Outpost' Concerns
Mazen Ganaim, head of the National Committee of Arab Local Authority Heads and Mayor of Sakhnin, has called for an emergency meeting in Majd al-Krum to address recent developments in the al-Rous area. Ganaim described the situation as a dangerous precedent, warning that it could lead to the establishment of a settler outpost on the town's lands and potentially threaten the future of Arab lands in the region.
The emergency meeting, organized by the National Committee and the Follow-up Committee for Arab Citizens in Israel in coordination with the Majd al-Krum council head, aims to discuss the situation and formulate practical steps. Ganaim emphasized that this is not just a local issue but a broader concern for Arab communities, stating that allowing the outpost to solidify could pave the way for similar actions in other areas.
He expressed concern that these developments could escalate tensions and create friction between Arab and Jewish residents amidst an already volatile political, security, and social climate. Ganaim rejected justifications linking the presence of these groups to grazing activities, asserting that the core issue is the identity and intentions of the individuals involved. He also holds surrounding local authorities responsible, regardless of their direct jurisdiction over the land.
Ganaim believes these actions are part of a wider agenda to Judaize the Negev and Galilee, referencing past statements by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich regarding Sakhnin and other Arab areas. He specifically highlighted the establishment of outposts around Majd al-Krum, Sakhnin, and other Arab towns as a serious development, especially if temporary presences become permanent.
He stressed the need for a unified response from Arab local authorities and popular organizations, stating that confronting these developments cannot be left to a single town. Ganaim also voiced pessimism about the current Israeli government's policies, which he believes are fueling tension, and called for its replacement through elections, warning of a more difficult future if the Arab community is unprepared.
