Robert Kraft Admits Pressuring to Remove Macklemore From Ed Sheeran Tour

Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, confirmed Monday that he played a role in removing rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran's North American tour. The controversy began after a concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Macklemore accused Israel of genocide and called for "Free Palestine" while images of the Gaza war were shown. This incident drew criticism from several Jewish and pro-Israel organizations, including the Israeli-American Council, which demanded the rapper's exclusion. Singer Pink also condemned Macklemore's stance.

Following the backlash, Ed Sheeran's North American promoter announced that several stadiums would no longer host concerts featuring Macklemore. The rapper then accused Robert Kraft of spearheading the pressure campaign and convincing other venue owners to issue an ultimatum to Sheeran. Kraft has now acknowledged his involvement, stating that Macklemore's presence at the Gillette Stadium shows on September 25 and 26 would have violated stadium rules against hate speech.

Kraft cited Macklemore's recent statements, the visuals during the New Jersey concert, and what he described as a "history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery" as deeply offensive to the Jewish community. However, the billionaire asserted that the decision was not intended to deny Palestinian civilian suffering or their right to defense, stating, "Their pain and losses are real." He added that this advocacy should not come "at the expense of the Jewish community" or obscure Hamas's responsibility.

Kraft also criticized Macklemore for presenting selective information and ignoring the actions of Hamas, which he believes fuels division and hatred. Kraft, who has long been involved in combating antisemitism, stated he felt compelled to intervene when he believes a line has been crossed. He concluded by offering to meet with Macklemore to discuss their differences, emphasizing a shared goal of peace and an end to suffering.
