Hostage Negotiator's Mother Criticizes Netanyahu's Wife

Einav Tsengauker, whose son Matan was held hostage by Hamas, has spoken out about her experiences and disillusionment with Israeli leadership. Tsengauker, previously a vocal advocate for the hostages, revealed a significant shift in her worldview, moving away from what she described as "extreme right-wing" beliefs following her son's abduction on October 7th.

She recounted the initial uncertainty and distress her family faced, including military assessments that her son might have been killed. This period spurred her into public activism to keep the hostage crisis in the spotlight. A pivotal moment, she stated, occurred during a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, with families of hostages.

Tsengauker alleged that Sara Netanyahu arrived with her stylist and that the Prime Minister focused on his own past and his brother's heroism, rather than the families' suffering. "I saw the contempt of the Prime Minister and his wife," Tsengauker said, feeling the event was a "PR stunt on our backs" and a betrayal of her long-held admiration for Netanyahu as "Mr. Security."

Despite this, Tsengauker acknowledged receiving a prompt call from the Prime Minister after requesting one, and he subsequently invited her for a private meeting. She also revealed a unique collaboration with the Shin Bet, which recorded her delivering a message in Arabic to her son's captors.

Following her son's release, Tsengauker had hoped for a reserved spot on the Democratic Party's list but was ultimately excluded when party leader Yair Golan relinquished his authority to reserve candidacies. While disappointed with the process, she remains committed to entering politics, believing that elected officials hold the power to enact policy changes.
