Israel Volleyball Team Loses to Bulgaria in European Championship Opener

The Israeli men's national volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Bulgaria, the reigning world championship runner-up, in their European Championship opener on Monday. Playing in front of thousands of spectators in Bulgaria's home arena, Israel put up a strong fight, particularly in the first two sets. Israel secured the first set 25-23, showcasing an aggressive start that surprised the hosts. The second set was a close contest, with Israel leading at times, but Bulgaria ultimately prevailed 25-22, boosted by the home crowd. In the final two sets, Bulgaria's superior quality, powerful offense, and strong serves proved decisive, leading to set scores of 25-15 and 25-20.

Despite the loss, Israeli player Omri Rotman expressed pride in the team's performance, stating, "What I love about our team is that we don't give too much respect to any opponent." He added that the team "came to show our abilities" and put Bulgaria under pressure. "Our team is talented, a fighter, and mature," Rotman said, emphasizing the upcoming "decisive game against North Macedonia" on Wednesday, which is crucial for achieving their goal.

Head coach Itamar Stein described the experience as "amazing" against a large crowd. He noted that Israel played at their highest level in the first two sets, pushing a world-class opponent. "We made them sweat and need the crowd to come back in the second set," Stein commented, acknowledging some disappointment at not securing a 2-0 lead. He praised the players and staff and expressed confidence in their ability to "come strong on Wednesday to ensure qualification."
