Victims' Families Fear Lenient Sentence in Fatal DUI Case

The Beersheba District Court is set to deliver its verdict on Tuesday against Syria Abu Arar, who is accused of the negligent homicide of Shahaf Danino and Eliab Abukasis. The couple was killed in a fatal road accident just months before their planned wedding. Prosecutors allege Abu Arar was speeding and illegally overtook another vehicle by crossing a solid white line.

Families of the victims are expected to attend the sentencing, hoping for a significant punishment. Shahaf's sister expressed the family's deep pain and grief, stating, "Alongside the pain, there is also great concern whether the verdict will truly reflect the severity of the act and the two lives taken from us." She emphasized that Shahaf and Eliab were young individuals with dreams and a future, not just "numbers in a case."

"No verdict will bring them back, but we expect the punishment to be significant and send a clear message: human lives are not disposable, and those who choose to drive in a dangerous and fatal manner must bear heavy responsibility," she added.

Attorney Hadass Danino, representing the families through the Southern District Legal Aid, described the incident as a severe accident caused by a driver who "ignored all traffic laws and drove on the road as if it were her own, crossing a solid white line and driving in the oncoming lane for minutes, while vehicles were forced to swerve to the shoulder to escape, until she hit and killed Shahaf and Eliab." The legal team hopes the court will impose a harsh sentence and deliver justice to the families.
