Jordanian Port Evacuated After Dangerous Gas Leak Injures 11

Jordan's southern port city of Aqaba, located across the Gulf of Aqaba from Eilat, Israel, was evacuated on Monday following a hazardous materials leak. At least 11 people were injured in the incident, which occurred during maintenance work in the southern industrial area of the city. State television announced the evacuation of the port as a precautionary measure while authorities worked to contain the situation and ensure the safety of those in the vicinity.

The leak involved ammonia gas, a colorless chemical with a pungent odor widely used in fertilizer and chemical production, as well as in some cooling systems and industrial processes. According to the Jordanian official source cited by "Al-Mamlaka" network, the leak happened during maintenance on old pumping or pressure equipment. Professional teams have since managed to control the event.

Ammonia leaks can pose a danger when inhaled at high concentrations, potentially causing irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, and shortness of breath. Severe exposure can lead to serious respiratory damage. The industrial area where the incident occurred is reportedly far from residential zones.
