Northern Resident Sentenced to Four Years for Funding Hamas

A resident of Sakhnin in northern Israel, Suhail Bashir, has been sentenced to four years in prison after admitting and being convicted of transferring over 650,000 shekels to the West Bank. This transfer was part of a mechanism that funneled millions of shekels to support Hamas infrastructure.

The judge stated that Bashir "closed his eyes" to the fact that the money was intended for terror financing. She further noted that Bashir's personal success and background made him an unlikely candidate for such offenses, particularly those related to terrorism, and that his actions were not driven by financial need.

The court emphasized that Bashir committed the offenses while deliberately ignoring the money's destination for terror funding, which the judge considered a less severe position than those who acted with full awareness of the purpose. The judge also highlighted that the crimes were committed during wartime, shortly after the October 7, 2023, attacks, adding a significant layer of severity to the case.

Bashir's conviction adds to ongoing efforts to combat the flow of funds to designated terrorist organizations.
