Google Taps Israeli Team for Advanced AI Chip Development
Google has initiated the formation of an engineering team in Israel dedicated to developing a new generation of specialized processors for robots and autonomous systems. The project focuses on Edge AI technology, enabling artificial intelligence tasks to be processed directly on the device, which is crucial for applications like robotics, drones, and autonomous vehicles to minimize data transmission delays.
The initiative is led by Guy Kaminitz, who previously served as Vice President of Research and Development at Hailo, an Israeli AI chip manufacturer. Google has already begun recruiting specialists for this new team, which will contribute to the company's existing workforce of approximately 700 engineers in Tel Aviv and Haifa working on chip development and computational infrastructure.
Israel was chosen for this project due to its robust ecosystem in semiconductors, AI accelerators, computer vision, and autonomous technologies. The country also hosts major research centers for global tech companies such as NVIDIA, Intel, and Apple.
While the primary application for these new processors is civilian robotics, the technology could potentially be adapted for drones, reconnaissance, and other autonomous systems. Google has not yet disclosed the project's budget or the timeline for the release of the first chips.
