It is important to note that a maximum reading at one point does not represent the average exposure for all passengers throughout a journey, as field strength fluctuates based on location and driving state.
While Israel's Ministry of Environmental Protection recommends an average daily exposure limit of 4 milligauss for electrical installations under the precautionary principle, this is not a legally binding standard for vehicles. The significant discrepancies, with some vehicles exceeding the recommended guideline by over 50 times, raise questions about consumer awareness and potential health impacts.
The link between prolonged exposure to low-frequency magnetic fields and health effects, particularly childhood leukemia, has been studied for years, with research also examining impacts on pregnancy, fetal development, and neurological effects. This uncertainty underscores the importance of the precautionary principle and accessible measurement data.
In response, a proposed bill in the Knesset aims to mandate disclosure of radiation levels in electric vehicle advertisements and at points of sale, allowing consumers to compare vehicles based on exposure. This initiative seeks to add radiation levels to the existing comparison metrics like fuel efficiency and safety features. Meanwhile, SafeFields has developed a real-time magnetic field reduction system, similar to noise-canceling technology, which is being piloted in Israel with plans for international expansion. The company also offers retrofittable systems for existing vehicles.
