Colombian President Visits Synagogue, Pledges Support for Israel

Colombian President Aberlardo de la Espriella surprised congregants at the Beth El synagogue in Barranquilla on Saturday, joining the Jewish community's Rosh Hashanah celebrations. During his visit, he expressed strong support for Israel, stating he would continue to stand by the nation. De la Espriella described his presence as a "gesture of respect, affection, and brotherhood" towards Colombia's Jewish community and offered a prayer for Jewish families in Colombia and the people of Israel.

The president then delivered a more direct political message, affirming his unwavering commitment to defending Israel, which he called "the people of God." He recalled defending Israel even during his presidential campaign, despite advice to avoid the topic. He also called for Jews and Christians to uphold shared values such as faith, life, family, human dignity, justice, and peace.

This visit occurs amid a significant shift in Colombia's policy towards Israel, following over two years of diplomatic tension during the previous administration. De la Espriella has pledged to restore full diplomatic relations and move Colombia's embassy to Jerusalem. His government has also taken steps to resume Colombian coal exports to Israel and withdrew from South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

In August, Israeli Foreign Minister G Gideon Saar met with the Colombian president, noting joint efforts to strengthen diplomatic, security, and economic ties. The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed agreements to fully restore diplomatic relations, appoint ambassadors, and relocate Colombia's embassy to Jerusalem. Additionally, Colombia recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, becoming the second country after the United States to do so.
