Colombia's President-Elect Plans to Move Embassy to Jerusalem and Restore Israel Ties
Colombia's president-elect, Abelardo de la Espriella, intends to relocate the Colombian embassy to Jerusalem, reversing the previous administration's policy. This announcement comes over two years after outgoing President Gustavo Petro severed diplomatic relations with Israel due to the Gaza conflict. De la Espriella, set to assume office on August 7, plans to restore and strengthen historic ties with Israel immediately upon taking office.
The designated Colombian Foreign Minister, Omar Bola, recently met with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar to discuss renewing bilateral relations. Bola confirmed Colombia's intention to open its embassy in Jerusalem, and Sa'ar pledged full support from his ministry to facilitate the move promptly. Additionally, both ministers agreed to mutually waive visa requirements between the two countries.
Reports indicate that the Israeli Foreign Ministry is preparing to appoint a new ambassador to Bogotá as early as next week. The previous Israeli ambassador returned to Israel in June 2024, coinciding with the departure of Colombia's last ambassador from Israel, marking a diplomatic hiatus that the new administration aims to end.
