Former Israeli Soccer Star Chen Ezra Finds New Life in Religious Study
Chen Ezra, once a prominent player in Israel's top soccer league, has embarked on a new path after retiring from the sport due to a severe ligament injury. He has turned away from the spotlight to dedicate himself to studying Torah at a yeshiva.
In a recent interview, Ezra shared details of his spiritual journey and the significant financial sacrifices he made to adhere to religious observance. He explained that he always maintained a connection to his faith, even during his playing career, making efforts to observe the Sabbath by walking to games when necessary. The biggest test came when he received a lucrative offer from Russia for half a million dollars.
Ezra recounted discussing the offer with his rabbi but ultimately declined, stating, "I couldn't do something like that for money. It's something internal in the soul, I simply cannot sell the Sabbath." He also recalled a "personal miracle" in Cyprus, where he signed a contract with a clause allowing him to observe the Sabbath fully, including arrangements for kosher food and accommodation.
Reflecting on his transition from professional sports, Ezra noted that Torah study filled the void left by his abrupt retirement. "To come from a world of crowds and honor and suddenly end it in an instant, Torah not only filled the void, it surpassed it by several degrees," he said. His current daily routine involves early morning prayers followed by intensive Talmud and Halakha study from morning until afternoon.
Ezra described the profound change in his life, saying, "Sometimes I feel like I'm two people in one person, two lifetimes in one world. In the first life, you already forget everything."
