Hasidic Rebbes Fulfill Ancient Vow Ritual Ahead of Jewish New Year

By כיכר השבת, חיים רוזנבוים
Translated & summarized from Kikar HaShabbat by baba
The story · English

As the Jewish year 5786 (Tash'fuf-vav) drew to a close, several Hasidic rebbes in the city of Bnei Brak performed the ancient ritual of "Hatarat Nedarim" (annulment of vows). This tradition is observed to enter the new year free from any oaths or vows.

In some Hasidic courts, the rebbes appeared before elder Hasidim to have their vows annulled. In others, they presented themselves before rabbinical judges and halachic authorities (poskim) for the same purpose.

Photographer Shuki Lerer documented these solemn moments from the holy chambers of several Hasidic dynasties, including Nadvorna, Premishlan, Sadigura, Maknovka-Belz, Temeshvar, and Modzhitz. The gallery captures the grandeur of the occasion within these Hasidic courts.
