Israel Eliminates Hamas Khan Younis Brigade Commander in Gaza
During the Rosh Hashanah holiday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency eliminated a senior Hamas commander, Mohammed al-Yazouri, who led the organization's Khan Younis brigade. The strike also killed a company commander and other operatives, while targeting weapons depots and terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. The operation aimed to disrupt Hamas's efforts to rebuild its capabilities.
According to the Shin Bet and IDF, al-Yazouri held several key positions within the Hamas brigade, including deputy commander, commander of the combat support battalion, and head of intelligence. In his role, he was responsible for managing the brigade's operatives and directing terror attacks against Israeli forces and civilians. The IDF stated that al-Yazouri had trained in sniper operations in Gaza with the intent of targeting Israeli civilians and soldiers operating near the border fence.
Recent intelligence indicated that al-Yazouri had been actively involved in restoring Hamas's operational strength, systematically violating the ceasefire agreement. His elimination was deemed necessary to neutralize the threat he posed. A security official noted that Hamas is attempting to amass weaponry and firepower for potential future conflict with Israel and to advance guerrilla warfare tactics against IDF forces in the Gaza security zone and along the border.
The IDF and Shin Bet have intensified their counter-terrorism operations in Gaza, focusing on high-ranking officials in Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad involved in bolstering the organizations' military power and rebuilding terror infrastructure.
